Zambia Satellite Signalling

Cost effective safe signalling is a major challenge in Africa. By installing a satellite signalling system, was not only the major aims achieved, but additional benefits like real time tracking of trains, additional security and low maintenance cost.

Locomotive Satellite Unit 

The satellite units communicates directly to the satellite every 10 minutes reporting the GPS position, direction and speed.

A keypad / display allows for SMS messages to be send from the locomotive or received from the dispatcher.

Digital input reports the following status:

  • Locomotive switch on

  • Emergency request

  • Station Clear

  • Section Clear

A geo-fence can be set up to warn the dispatcher when the train nears the end of a valid warrant. 

Dispatcher Base Station

The base station consist of four standard PCs with graphic displays. Two are used to display and issuing of warrants on the Northen and Southern sections. One PC is used as standby and the forth for a display of the supervisor.

The positions of the trains can be displayed by using a viewer via internet connection.

The graphic screen displays the real time position of the locomotives. If no report was received for more than 30 minutes, the dispatcher is warned that there may be a problem with the locomotive.

Track warrants are issue using the mouse on the computer. All warrants are displayed on the screen. The system will no allow a dispatcher to issue a conflicting warrant.

The security module monitor pre-set condition of the locomotives. Typical alarms will be the reporting of a train that stops between stations or if a locomotive moves faster than 20 KM/h in a station area. 

Driver Communications

RSZ uses a two way radio system to communicate to the trains. The track warrants with track warning are issued by voice. The warrant is also downloaded via SMS to the display on the locomotive.
